Trauma is part of the human experience. Some people seem to glide through Huge experiences, like the Covid-19 pandemic, without breaking a sweat. Other folk are torn apart by what seems to be the tiniest bumps in the road. We’re all affected by our experiences differently, so it’s hard to clearly define what causes Trauma.

Luckily, we don’t necessarily need to define the cause. It may be more useful to talk about the results. Recovering from Trauma is kind of like moving through the Grieving process; recovery moves at it’s own pace and each step is unique to the individual.

Often, folks who have experienced Trauma will move back and forth through many emotions, including anxiety and worry, depression and sorrow, grief and loss, fear, anger, and detachment. They may find their nervous system is jangled, disturbed, ultra sensitive, or seemingly hair-trigger, causing them to move abruptly and powerfully into fight-or-flight response or behavior, as is the case for folks who suffer from PTSD or CPTSD. The recovery process may move swiftly, eventually moving the individual into a new, healthy world in a matter of days or weeks. It may take much longer, months, years, or even decades.

Plant Remedies as Part of Your Recovery Team

Plants have survived and thrived despite harsh conditions for far longer than humans have walked this Earth. They’re experts at adapting to the conditions that are right here right now. They know how to recover when life deals them a raw blow. Have you ever pruned a wild rose in spring only to realize by mid-summer you’re gonna have to hack it back again before the growing season’s through? That right there is a prime example of the power of Plants to overcome trauma and thrive on.

Herbalists draw on a wide variety of herbs to help people move through the recovery process. Plants work on multiple levels to help the body-mind-spirit heal, even if we don’t recognize that’s what they’re doing. Flower Essences work at a more subtle level to support healing, helping the change to move through the energetic-spiritual-emotional levels before manifesting in the body as a physical healing. Plants that we ingest, like Chamomile tea, work on a more gross level, working through the body to shift the energetic-emotional-spiritual states. Essential oils can work from either direction, depending on how they’re used.

If you’re looking for herbs to help you process trauma, consider calming herbs, like nervines and sedatives, to help your nervous system rest and recover. Look at herbs for Anxiety as well as those for Depression and Grief, as makes sense for your experience. Consider using meditation, EFT, yoga, journaling, and other self-help tools to soothe your system and keep your energy moving forward as you recover. Most importantly, be kind and compassionate with yourself and ask for support.
